Abstract:Preface by John GEAR. A HSDU (Health Services Development Unit, Departement of Communty Health of Witwatersrand Medical School) Paper. A health centre is a health facility between a large clinic an a small hospital. It has a staff of 20-40, including 5-10 registered nurses. It should serve a population of more than 100 000. The Gazankulu five years health plan of 1977 envisaged that such centres would replace clinics as the main community health care facility. Five were planned for the Mhala district. Only one has been built. Eight more clinics could have been built and run at the same cost. Building health centres before there are adequate clinics is placing the cart before the horses.
