Abstract:Brief overview of Islam and Islamitic law in Africa and of the introduction of Western Law during the colonial period are followed by a description of the major reforms introduced in five countries: Somalia, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali and Tanzania. In conclusion, the likely impact of this legislation upon Muslim women is assessed in terms of its significance for the broader issues of legal reform and social change.
