Abstract:Traces the history of the project to dig a canal between Jonglei and the mouth of the Sobat, from 1936 to 1974, when the Sudan and Egypt signed an agreement on the 'Jonglei Canal Project, Phase I', and 1979, when a new alignement was adopted, increasing the canal length by 60 km. compared to the 1974 version. About 450,000 people will be affected, Dinka, Nuer, and Shilluk. Anticipation benefits: improvement of the livestock economy of the area; provision of better services to the local population; elimination of the perennial threat of flooding; implementation of mechanized agricultural schemes; provision of a navigable water routem of an all weather road running on the eastern embankment, and of irrigation water for the Sudan and Egypt.
