Abstract: | The length of time most rural Kenyan women devote to childbearing and the limited opportunities for higher education and involvement in formal sector employment for those who marry young are all part of the broader circumstances under which reproduction takes place. This article discusses some of the issues related to women's reproductive roles and rights in Kenya, such as age at first birth, ideal family size, contraceptive knowledge and use, spacing of births and reproductive health, against the twin background of tradition and modernization and within the broader context of these women's lives. It is based on the results of a fertility survey conducted in 1990 among a total of 417 rural women in Kericho District. Bibliogr., notes. |
