Abstract:The situation confronting many women extension officers in the agricultural services of Kenya presents the classic picture of role-, or more precisely, status-conflict where the individual - holding two or more social positions - is simultaneously expected to exhibit quite different patterns of behaviour for each. This conflict can take a particular form for those individuals who at the same time occupy both the marital/sexual status of 'married-women-with-children' and the economic status of 'full-time employee'. It is argued that these two statuses can be combined only with difficulty, and the ability of the individual to perform optimally in either of the two spheres is necessarily limited, not only because the tasks and activities associated with each status can be heavy and demanding but also because each is thought to require a very different set of personality traits.
