Abstract:Agricultural research in Northern Nigeria began in 1924 with the agricultural station at Samaru near Zaria. Over the years this station developed into the Headquarters for agricultural research in Northern Nigeria and from there much of the work done at the experimental farm at Kano, established 1925, has been controlled. During the 1950s the research programme in the North greatly expanded: research sub-stations at Mokwa and at Kano. The development of the Kano research sub-station has followed that of the headquarters at Samaru; in 1962 it became an Institute within Ahmadu. Bello University, With assistance of the Rockefeller Foundation a new office and laboratory block was build which were initiated in 1965. The objects of the work of this independent institute for agricultural research are the improvement of groundnuts, millets, guinea-corn and cowpeas by breeding and selection with the aim to get improvements in yield and quality. Agricultural research is now firmly established in Kano.
