Abstract:Article based on Kurt R. Anschel: 'Economic aspects of the peasant rubber production in mid-western Nigeria' (unpublished Ph.D. dissertation, Michigan State University, 1965)- About 98% of Nigeria's rubber is produced by peasant smallholders, mostly in the Mid-Western Region. Little is known about their production methods or costs. The government needs more reliable and complete data on current conditions. Reporting on a study which attempts to provide some of that data, this article compares the profitability of the alternative small holder rubber production organizations, evaluates the impact of falling world market prices on the profitability of rubber smallholdings, compares the returns from rubber and palm production, suggests alternative solutions to adjusting the industry to the impact of falling prices.
