Abstract:Report on an exploratory study of the sources and nature of productivity growth in the Nigerian manufacturing sector in the period 1962-1975 through a quantitative analysis of technology in nineteen manufacturing industries. The basic model was that of the constant elasticity of substitution (CES) production function. Concern was with determinants of productivity growth such as technical change, ease of factor substitution and the differential growth rate of industries. Results indicate that the level of substitution in Nigerian industries is very low; only sixteen percent of the industries exhibit a high level of substitution of capital and labour. App., ref.
