Abstract:The Matabele War of 1893 and the Shona and Ndebele risings of 1896-7, two outbursts of violence, had different repercussions. The Matabele War witnessed the largely unprovoked expropriation of an African state by the British South Africa Company and the white settlers. The risings - the ChiMurenga - represent the classic and most spectacular example of African primary resistance to the imposition of white rule. Examined are the effects of these outbursts on the evolution of land policies in Rhodesia. Ref.
