Abstract:This paper has two purposes. First it presents a brief analysis of LEFEVER, E.W., 'Spear and Scepter: Army and Politics in Tropical Africa', Washington, 1970; and takes issue with it. Second, the author revisits the development that took place under colonial imperialism. Sections: Spear and Scepter - colonial developmen - pacification - economic development -Christianity and Christian missionaries - Western education - Western democracy. Conclusion: the purpose of colonial imperialism was not to 'civilize' but to exploit. Notes.
