Abstract: | In the early years of colonization the development of education was not, at the initial stage, the primary objective of the French colonial enterprise. The first meeting of the ministers of education of Francophone Africa and Madagascar in 1960 was however, an important turning point in the develoPment of education in these areas. From then on Francophone African Ministers of Education began to meet twice a year, once in Paris and once in any other Francophone capital to discuss problems related to Education. The resume of the Nouakchott meeting of 1970 spot-lights some of the usual subjects of discussion: teaching of history and geography: technical education; higher education; rule thodo logy technical assistance, etc. The author shows how the team work of the ministers has contributed to the development of Education in Francophone Africa: New trends: the primary school - The Francophone Universities.
