Abstract: | After an introduction concerning the role of ruling parties in Africa in general, the author examines the character and the organization of TANU, which though it is the only political party in Tanganyika de jure and de facto, is far from a monolithic party but is rather more a grouping of organizations functioning under known national leaders. Next the diverse important functions of TANU in the party state Tanzania are exposed. Conclusions; notes. |
