Abstract:The regional offices of the World Bank which were opened in 1965 in Abidjan (Ivory Coast) and Nairobi (Kenya) were the first outside Europe to be assigned a regional responsibility, embracing several countries, and to be explicitly designed as permanent. The responsibility of the Abidjan Office comprises the countries in West Africa south of the Sahara, from Mauritania down to Congo (Brazzaville), while Eastern and Central Africa from Ethiopia down to Botswana and Lesotho, plus Congo (Kinshasa) and the Malagasy Republic are handled from Nairobi. With regard to the African countries the Bank has recognized that providing assistance from Bank headquarters would be very difficult. With emphasis on assisting, the Nairobi Mission typically tries to foster the evolution of projects. In a more limited way it is helping to evolve agricultural credit programs in Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia; livestock development projects in Kenya, the Malagasy Republic, Uganda, Tanzania; road studies in other East African countries. For special problems of agricultural organization and management the Mission is assisted by the Agricultural Development Service (ADS) in Eastern Africa. Map.
