Abstract:	Particular attention has in recent years been given to the Gezira joint account production relation, which is basically a share-cropping arrangement between the tenants and the Government over the proceeds of the cotton crop. Thus, in pursuit of production efficiency the IBRD (1966) proposed the replacement of the Gezira sharing arrangement with a land-andwater charge (LWC) system, under which for all crops grown under the rotation tenants would be charged for all inputs including land and water. In June 1980 the Government, under pressure from the IMF, declared its intention of effecting the change starting in the 1981/82 season, so that all schemes operating a joint account sharing arrangement would adopt an individual account, or LWC system. This paper argues that the LWC system is completely misconceived and totally inappropriate for irrigated agriculture in the Sudan, on grounds of both efficiency and equity. Ref., tab.
