Abstract: | The part John Ainsworth played in bringing about agricultural innovation in the form of new crops and techniques of cultivation has remained largely unrecognized. The article describes the important role he played in agricultural innovation in early colonial Kenya by the examples of his garden at Machakos and Nairobi, by his position as Secretary of British East Africa's first agricultural society, and by his introduction of cash crop agriculture on a significant scale in Nyanza Province.
