| Abstract: | In 1963 the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) split into the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) and the People's Caretaker Council (PCC) which retained the name ZAPU overseas. The article analyses the factors leading to the split and shows that essentially the split arose from political frustration: the nationalist organisations had not been able to gain mass support for more than a short time.
