Abstract:The word patronage in this context implies the support, influence, business, or activity provided by patrons, and especially in the fiddle tradition, the payment given or kindness done with an air of superiority. This paper examines tho systems of patronage in Dagomba and Hausa one-string fiddle traditions and their implications for the recruitment and training of musicians, the development of style and repertoire, performer-audience relationship and support for musicians.
