Abstract: | With independence, the Tanzanian government was quite determined to ensure that the country would rapidly become self-reliant and dynamic. It envisaged the maintenance of a moderately high growth rate in which a general structuring of the economy would be achieved. The present paper evaluates the extent to which, in its first independence decade, such objectives were realised. Sections: The government's economic strategy - The agriculture sector - Mining - The manufacturing sector - Capital formation - Government and the economy - The balance of payments and external sector - General conclusions - A note on data sources.
