Abstract:Changes in the rural settlement pattern during the period 1902-1970 are examined following the classification of transformations devised by R.K. Udo. Six major categories are initially recognised: fixation, downhill migration, disintegration, integration and amalgamation, functional transformation and resettlement. In addition two other types of change are investigated: movement from the forest and the settlement of the cattle Fulani. The importance of the changes is assessed and the many factors involved are discussed. Cultural factors are shown to be very important in certain changes. Finally, an account of problems arising from the application of the classification, certain modifications are proposed. Notes, table, figures.
