Abstract: | The Aswan High Dam is not some kind of sinister modern break with an Arcadian tradition of accommodation with nature, but rather only the most recent - and surely not the last - manifestation of an historical pattern. Yet the dam has been a nearly irresistible target for sensational 'exposes' in newspapers and magazines branding it an ecological nightmare. Less well known to the general public is a growing body of highly specialized studies treating more seriously, and more fairly, the intricacies of river management. This study summarizes some of this research examining the High Dam in the context of Egypt's historical efforts to feed and improve living standards for a growing population. Against a background of critiques of the dam, the often complex interconnections among various facets of the resultant new lake/river ecosystem are explored; latest (sometimes tentative) conclusions of scientific observers are indicated; questions still being posed are noted; possible future developments along the Nile are discussed. Physical conditions are examined. Notes. |
