Abstract:Deals with the main non-white groups involvec with firearms (the Cape Khoi, Xhosa, Griqua Nama, Herero, Tswana, southern Sotho, Zulu, Swazi, Ndebele, Gaza, Venda) and with black-white conflicts (Portuguese-Dombo, Dutch-Khoi German-Herero, British-Xhosa) until the beginning of the 20th century. In southern Africa the presence of white settlers meant that the quality and quantity of firearms available to Africans were on a scale probably unprecedented in sub-Saharan Africa. It also 156 means that southern Africa has witnessed not only over three centuries of conflict between blacks and whites, but also decades of conflict between the white groups; some topics for investigation are suggested.
