Abstract:Cairo's architectural legacy includes some six hundred Islamic monuments spanning a thousand year period from 827 to 1840. Their likes in terms of number, of variety of styles and periods and purposes, and of concentration along major arteries, are unparalleled in the world. The monuments are concentrated around three main foci in the main area of medieval Cairo, the physical and historic core of the modern megalopolis. The first focus is the mosque of Ibn Tulun, 876-879 A.D.; the second the city of al-Qahira, founded as the royal preserve of the Fatimid Dynasty (969-1171); the third is the Citadel, the fortress stronghold established by Salah al-Din ibn Ayyub. Today, three factors in particular are threatening Cairo's medieval legacy: population growth, industrialisation, and the current restoration policy. Coordinated efforts are needed to save the monuments for the future. - Map, notes.
