| Abstract: | Publication, with commentary, of a set of instructions left to his interim replacement by Martin Watts, British agent at Komenda fort on the Gold Coast in the late 1770s. The instructions concern the attitudes, activities, and procedures Watts thought appropriate to the post, and they reveal both the underlying assumptions of the British on the Gold Coast and on the ways in which they sought to accommodate themselves to the routine exigencies they had learned to anticipate.
