Abstract: | Attempts an occupational classification of Sudanese towns using the data of the 1955/56 Census. The method adopted was that of the Standard Deviation worked out by H.J. Nelson for American cities. The analysis is based on the occupational distribution of population as provided by the 1955/56 Census for 35 towns each of which had a de jure population of at least 5,000. The remaining towns which had a de jure population of less than 5,000 are not covered by this study. The study indicates that some of the urban techniques applied to classify towns in Western Europe and North America can be applied to towns in the Tropics, and that sometimes certain modifications and adaptations are needed to suit under-developed areas.
