Abstract: | However mysterious or intractable the Kisra legend may be, its close connection with the ruling houses of Borgu must be considered in the light of all the relevant evidence - including the archaeological and the linguistic - that is available. The legend cannot simply be dismissed as an ideological distortion of history geared to the integration of the Borgu state. While it may have served an integrative function, it was much more than an excrescence generated by political convenience, providing, as it does, a corroborated picture of a critical period in the history of the Borgu state.
