Abstract:Nigeria produces about 1 million tonnes of maize annually and nearly half as much has to be imported to cope with local demands. Consumption is rising significantly in Nigeria. This article presents the results of a study into the proportion of the income spent by workers on maize and other food, in order to steer the direction of rural and urban development, and to improve the wellfare of the people.
