Abstract:The joint application of the concepts of management science and behavioural science known as organization development (OD) has been carried out since 1971 as a vital part of the UNDP regional project devoted to administrative improvement and management training work with the former East African Community and its large-scale public corporations (Railways, Harbours, Airways, Post and Telecommunications). Such efforts at organization development and performance improvement planning (OD/PIP) have continued to be a part of the training, consultancy and research programme of the East African Management Institute, which was established in Arusha, Tanzania in 1974 as a major outcome of the UNDP regional project. The author presents the highlights of a case study of an OD/PIP effort within one of the large scale East African Community public corporations with which the UN team (J.A. Green, R. Abramson, D.D. Energin, B.A.N. Collins and P.A. Packman) worked for over three years. App., notes.
