Abstract: | On the occasion of Kyoto University Scientific Expedition to the Sahara held in 1967-1968, the author had an opportunity to visit the Mandara mountain area from Maroua, via Mokolo, to Mora. He picked up some vocabularies of several kinds of dialects and languages of the people, i.e. Kapsiki, Mandara, Mofa and Kanuri. Except the Kanuri, they belong to the Chadic languages (classification of D. Westermann and M.A. Bryan, 1952). In this report of the collected materials the languages are enumerated in order of the quality of the materials: 1. Kapsiki language of Roumsiki; 2. Kapsiki language of Tourou; 3. Mandara language of Mora; 4. Kapsiki language five kilometers north of Tourou; 5. Mandara and Kanuri languages. Notes, tables, figures. Appendix: Mandara language as recorded from information by a Mandara informant from Mora/Maiduguri. |
