Abstract:The Co-operative Credit Scheme, introduced in 1961, is based on the assumption that recipient farmers can increase their output, if credit were made available to them. In this article the participation of four co-operative societies in the scheme are examined in detail in the following sections: the organisation of the scheme - alternative uses for short-term credit - characteristics of borrowers. The conclusion is that at none of the four societies the Co-operative Credit Scheme had had any evident impact on crop yields or the incomes of borrowers. Notes, tables, appendix.
