Abstract:This paper reviews child health and the economy in Zimbabwe form the immediate preindependence period through the periods of postindependence economic growth, recession and drought. Imposition of stabilization policies and the recent beginning of economic recovery. It shows how stabilization has affected the general economic environment and how this may have influenced childhood mortality, morbidity and nutrition. The effect of stabilization on a reoriented and rapidly expanding health sector is examined and the impact on child health is assessed. Some general conclusions are drawn. It is necessary to improve the collection of relevant data. Selective health care interventions, often aid supported, may delay the development of the material and human infrastructure needed to begin to address the fundamental causes of childhood ill-health.
