Abstract:	This paper addresses the problem of subsistence change from nomadic pastoralism to sedentary agriculture as a consequence of drought and its subsequent effects on the social, economic and political structures of Somali populations living in northeastern Kenya. It first examines the nature of change encountered within the context of the first government initiated settlement begun in 1972 during the most acute period of drought. Secondly, it investigates change in response to settlement four and a half years later, detailing types of local innovations, social adaptations and technical modifications to sedentarization. Ref.
