Abstract:In the 1977-78 academic year, the author carried out a small study of the pioneer group of Ghanaian women in university teaching and research. From the 24 completed questionnaires which were returned, some kind of picture of Ghanaian women in academia emerged. It was found that they came from educated homes and although they were new to the occupation, they appeared committed to the work. The major constraints on their work and productivity were their family and houshold responsibilities since most of them were married and had children. Although quite a number obtained some assistance from husbands in the house (shopping, gardening), not much joint conjugal role relationships was enjoyed by many of them since they still bore a lot of the household chores and this tended to interfere with the time they could spend reading and writing for publication.
