Abstract:The author, Director of the International Louis Leakey Memorial Institute for African Prehistory and Chairman of the Historical association of Kenya adopts an auto-biographical approach to the subject of historical studies at Makerere and Nairobi because he was involved from within. He also pays a ttention to the activities of the Department of History at Dar-es-Salaam. To his survey of historical studies at the three University Departments of History in East Africa during the decades 1949-1977 he adds some suggestions for developing the study of the history of East Africa.
