Abstract: | This paper seeks to describe the cultivation of historians through the institution of postsecondary training in history since 1926 and, from 1947, post-graduate training. It contends that the establishment of the university College, Ibadan, in 1948 and the subsequent emergence of a core of academic historians were crucial in the creation of professional historians. The establishment in 1955 of a professional association and the efforts of K. Dike should be seen as educational factors which by 1956 had provided the foundation for the modern profession of historian in Nigeria. The choice of dates has been determined by the inauguration of education reforms in 1926 and by the appointment of K. Dike as the first Professor of History in Nigeria in 1956. Notes. |
