Abstract: | The Conference was held in Dar es Salaam in September 1963, under the Chairmanship of the Minister of Justice of Tanganyika, the Hob. Sheikh Amri Abedi. The record of the proceedings of this Conference is published as 'African Conference on Local Courts and Customary Law'. The Conference was a sequel, as regards local courts, to the Judicial Advisers' Conferences held in 1953 at Makerere College, Uganda and in 1956 at Jos, Nigeria (records published as Special Supplements to the Journal of African Administration in October 1953 and April 1957, and as regards customary law, to the Conference on the Future of Law in Africa held in December -59/ January '60 in London (records published as 'The Future of La, in Africa', ed. A.N. Allott). Whereas the delegated of the earlier Conferences were principally expatriate judicial and administrative officers, the delegates of the Dar es Salaam Conference was also attended by observers, a.o. from the Netherlands. Three working committees considered the various aspects of the subject. The report has 5 parts, and 5 appendices. Unanimous agreement was impossible. Valuable specific suggestions were made, which are discussed in this article. |
