Abstract: | There are three kinds of settlement schemes that have been implemented in the Southern Save region of Mozambique: 1. Schemes originally designed to encourage white Portuguese peasants to establish themselves on smallholdings, where cash crops and mixed farming can be carried out; 2. Mixed schemes with large and small holdings for whites and Africans; 3. Land consolidation and villagization of traditional African cultivators. These three kinds are discussed in the article. The third type, of which Coolela is the model, is the most successful. Ref. |
