Abstract:A view generally shared by Marxist scholars is that, while the governing class of Tanzania is comprised of African politicians and civil servants, the ruling class is the international bourgeoisie. If this thesis is accepted, how does one explain the acquisition - of financial institutions by the state? If the petty bourgeoisie is indeed dependent on international capital, how is it that concerted opposition by powerful foreign banks could not reverse nationalisation in a backward, distorted economy? Purpose of this paper is to determine how nationalisation was achieved. What strategies did Tanzania and the banks adopt? The discussion focuses on a single conjuncture - the acquisition of the banks - from the standpoint of the political economy of Tanzania as a whole. Notes.
