Abstract: | The core problem in capital structure is associated with the concept of gearing or leverage which refers to the mix of debt and equity capital. The problem has dynamic and static aspects. The static aspect deals only with the optimum combination which is superior to any other alternative and not with the continuing process of matching funds from various sources to particular uses. This paper is mainly concerned with the latter aspect and examines the concept of the cost of capital and the effect on it of capital structure, drawing examples from the operations of a development finance company, the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank (NIDB).
