Abstract:In this article - a middle-range approach, that is to say an intermediate form between a microapplication and a macrotheory - the neglected areas of government expenditure and related economic policy are utilized as an information source, in the conviction that this measure of government activity can aid in elucidating the nature of the political system and the patterns of political change in a particular country. This is done in the folloving sections: Government expenditure as a political indicator - Relative emphasis on capital expenditure, 1946-69 - Selected areas of government spending, 1946-69 - Related economic and fiscal policies - Conclusion. Notes; tables.
