Abstract:Assesses the status of 'The history of Black Africa' by the Hungarian writer Endre Sik as a materialist history of Africa. First the author sifts out some general propositions about historical materialism and materialist history; next he summarises the structure and themes of the four volumes of the book and finally he considers two critics of Sik: H. Odera Oruko and I. Hrbek. Notes.
