Abstract: | Relations between Nigeria and its francophone neighbours Benin, Cameroon, Niger and Chad, have very frequently been described by political leaders in these countries as being based on the pursuit of 'good neighbourliness'. The problematic of this essay is concerned with determining both the nature and content of these relations of 'good neighbourliness' as well as the context within which they take place. The analysis is steered towards two main issue-areas: economic and security relations. This is preceded by an examination of the notion of 'good neighbourliness' as well as a consideration of its historical antecedents within the context of the spatial interactions of the area under study. - Notes, ref., also sum. in French and German, tab. |
