Abstract: | In the formative and crucial years of the British Anti-Slave-Trade Movement, Africans resident in Britain in general, and a Nigerian, Olaudah Equiano, in particular, played a vital role in the campaign to win public support for Abolition. This essay is a record of Equiano's work as an Abolitionist and leader of the African community in Britain during the last quarter of the eighteenth century (he died in 1797), especially during the years 1783 to 1792. It is not a biography of Olaudah Equiano, but an attempt to rescue from historical oblivion the contribution of Equiano to the rise of the British Anti-Slave-Trade Movement. Notes. |
