Abstract: | This article deals with the report filed by Mr. Marc Bossuyt, a member of the UN Sub-Commission on the Prevention of Discrimination of Minorities, on the mission he undertook to Mauritania from 14 to 21 January 1984. The mission's main aim was to gain an insight into the situation prevailing in Mauritania after the abolition of slavery proclaimed by the Military Committee for National Salvation on 5 July 1980 and confirmed by Decree of 9 November 1981. The mission was also designed to obtain information on the assistance that Mauritania might need from the international community in order to be able to overcome the effects of slavery more easily. This article summarizes the findings of Mr. Bossuyt. |
