Abstract:In many contemporary studies of rural labour-supplying areas in Southern Africa, a static notion of the household has been used, quite uncritically, as a primary unit of analysis. These studies give no recognition to the high turnover in membership experienced by many of these units over both longer and short periods of time. This paper considers the results of a longitudinal study conducted in a Sotho-speaking village in the Matatiele District of the Transkei, which indicate that, in addition to the residential turnover normally associated with areas supplying migrant labour, actual (de jure) membership of some household units was quite fluid. The factors contributing to this fluidity are discussed. Bibliogr., notes, ref.
