Abstract:Writers analysing traditional communities tend to choose as their focus the large agnatic groupings and to see the individual household as a mere subdivision of the basic building-block of social life. This paper, however, focuses on the household and describes and analyses the range of households in Morotse, a village situated on the peripheries of Lebowa. Sections: Nuclear households - Simple three-generational households - Extended households - Male and female headship - Pedi and Ndebele households - Small female-headed households - Discussion - The Ndebeles and labour tenancy - Conclusion.
