Abstract:The claims that area studies and African studies are in a terminal state of crisis simplify the past as much as they foreclose the unpredictable possibilities of the future. The author traces the history of African studies in the United States, which has been marked by a continuing tension-divide between 'the Africa' of African American scholar-activists, and 'the Africa' of European American academic Africanists. He looks at the changing intellectual, institutional, and ideological contexts in which African studies has evolved, and the 'new' challenges it faces concerning its mission and mandate, relations with the disciplines, and funding.
