Abstract:The confrontation of political exigencies and economic realities during the Depression in the circumscription of Yaounde, which housed the capital and was one of the most productive areas of colonial Cameroun, is discussed. The management of the Depression by the Camerounian Colonial state resulted not only in quantitative changes, for example in the volume of commodities produced and the level of animosity between the African population and the colonial government, but also provoked a permanent alteration in the local political configuration and patterns of agricultural production within the African population itself. In particular, it marked the beginning of the decline in wealth and power of the Beti administrative elite. Notes.
