Abstract: | This study focuses on the role of the railway in freight transportation in Nigeria. The paper shows that the rail transport has lost its dominant position in freight transportation to the competing road transports The structure of freight transported by the railway has also changed drastically over time. This declining demand for the railway freight service has partly been responsible for the under utilization of railway traffic capacity. This has also led to a deterioration in the financial position of the railway. The future competitiveness of the railway in the inter-city freight market depends on a complete over-haul of the railway system in Nigeria. Bibliogr., notes, tab. |
