Abstract:The role of railroads in the European conquest and 'pacification' of African states during the late 19th and early 20th centuries has rarely been emphasized in African history. This essay inquires into the official reasons why the Mombasa-Victoria Railway (popularly known as the 'Uganda Railway') was built. Sections: the politics of the 'Uganda Railway Bill', 1890-1896 - official support for the railway - Salisbury's watch on the progress of the railway, 1896-1900. Ref., summary.
