Abstract:The author presents several ideas on the subject of the history of the Portuguese in Africa. He brings into relief the originality of Portuguese expansion, stressing in it those points of view which are less characteristically European. He mentions the qualities and the faults of the work of the Portuguese in Africa. He draws attention to the importance of the reign of King John II for the Portuguese expansion in Africa and in the Tropics in general. He studies the curious figure of the coloured governor of Portuguese Guinea, Honorio Pereira Barreto in the light of the great changes in Africa during the last century.
